What is Permanent Scalp Micropigmentation? – Velvet Clinic

Up to 80% of men will experience some form of hair loss by the time they reach 50. Women suffer too; around 40% of women will see some hair thinning or loss by the age of 40,

It's not simply receding or thinning hair that can affect our lives. Alopecia (a condition where the hair falls out in patches) and scarring on the scalp (from a cut, trauma or even hair restoration surgery) can mean embarrassment, stress and emotional upset for those who experience these problems.

Fortunately, some non-surgical alternative treatments can restore the look of thicker, fuller hair, disguise scars, and improve self-confidence. One such treatment, available here at Velvet Pigmentation Clinics in London and Brighton, is permanent scalp Micropigmentation (or SMP).

What is permanent scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?

SMP is a type of tattoo that mimics the shaven hair follicles. A fine needle deposits tiny drops of natural pigmentation ink into the skin. Unlike some semi-permanent methods, SMP can last for many years, with top-up treatments only required every 3 to 5 years, or if the hair loss worsens in other areas of the scalp.

SMP can bring forward a hairline for those with shaven heads, giving the impression of stubble on the head and offer a less 'bald' look. For those with 'generally' thinning hair but which is worn in a longer style, SMP can give the impression of thicker hair at the scalp, by 'filling in' the gaps left by the thinning hair.

Clients with scars and shaven or short hairstyles, or who have scars from previous hair restoration treatments, can camouflage their scar with SMP, too.

Am I suitable for SMP?

Most people who are experiencing the effects of hair thinning or hair loss can benefit from scalp micropigmentation treatment. The most common issue that is addressed with SMP is male pattern baldness and diffused thinning on women. It is an incredibly effective treatment to enhance a hair transplant or disguise Hair transplant scars.

However, every case is unique, and there can be some reasons that might prevent or restrict a treatment from going ahead. We would ask that you attend either our London or Brighton clinic. One of our team can then examine your individual concerns, discuss the treatment at length, and check your medical history, to ensure the treatment will be safe and effective. At this stage, we will also perform a small patch test to check for any allergic reactions.

Once both parties are happy that SMP is the procedure for you, we can book you in for your transformation!

Does SMP hurt?

As we are using ultra fine needles to implant tiny ink particles just below the epidermal layer of the scalp, there may be some discomfort. However, SMP should not be painful, and many patients comment that it is far less painful than a regular tattoo.

Scalp micropigmentation is also far more comfortable than surgical options, and after your treatment, you won't feel any uncomfortable sensations. You can return to almost all of your daily activities immediately after treatment with no need for downtime or recovery at home, unlike more invasive procedures. We ask you to avoid excessive perspiration in the 3 days following a treatment session.
